can’t receive email after mailbox migration “MapiExceptionMaxObjsExceeded”

Issues:
One user can’t receive email after being migrated to Exchange 2013 and senders receive bounce messages that contain “STOREDRV.Deliver.Exception:StoragePermanentException.MapiExceptionMaxObjsExceeded; Failed to process message due to a permanent exception with message Cannot set search criteria in SearchFolder.”  Note: the entire bounce message can be found at end of this article).

Symtom’s:

  • Application log error “StoragePermanentException: Cannot set search criteria in Search Folder…“:
cannot-set-search-criteria-searchfolder

Agent ‘Conversations Processing Agent’ caused an unhanded exception ‘StoragePermanentException: Cannot set search criteria in SearchFolder. Try using fewer keywords at the same time, reducing the number of users in the From, To, Cc, and Bcc fields, and reducing the number of mailboxes that are searched at the same time.

  • You may also observe that when the newly migrated user tries to reply to an email they get “Operation failed” error message.

Solution:

Working with a Microsoft Engineer we identified that the newly migrated user’s mailbox had a large
number of Search Folders, that the were originally created as temporary folders when the user was performing various searches.  The Search Folders were not cleaned up automatically like they
should have been. Microsoft has a hard limit (8 or 80, I could not
understand for sure) and the user had 94.  Microsoft instructed us to delete all of
them except the default one using the MFCMAPI tool. We then ran Outlook
with the /cleanfinders switch and then the problems seemed to disappear.

Previous attempted solutions:
Force AD Replication
open a command prompt in ‘run as administrator’ mode
type: repadmin /syncall

Secondary Solutions for good measure:
1) Restart Exchange Transport Service
2) Run Mailbox repair:
New-MailboxRepairRequest -Mailbox john.recipient -CorruptionType ProvisionedFolder,SearchFolder,AggregateCounts,Folderview
note: you can add “-archive” if the user has a mailbox archive
